Aspiring author Ben Simmons hates imposing himself upon others, so when he breaks down in the small Rhode Island town of Kettering, he's forced to grit his teeth and lean on strangers for help.

It’s not all bad, though. His temporary host could not be more accommodating, and the local librarian quickly takes an interest in Ben, as well as the research for his next novel. Though unexpected, his short stay has the potential to be enjoyable. But when he stumbles upon the second murder in Kettering within a week, he realizes his presence in town might actually be life-threatening.

Ben soon finds himself torn between leaving as soon as he can and his feelings for the alluring Ellen Hornsby. However, the longer Ben stays in town, the more questions he has. Who is the killer? How are these murders connected to similar crimes committed thirty years before? And why haven't the townspeople done anything?

As Ben’s list of allies grows, so too does the threat that haunts the people of Kettering. Together, these individuals must set aside their differences and find the killer before the body count climbs any higher, but time is running out.

Something is in the woods, something hidden among the shadows that grow ever longer with winter's approach, and it's hunting all of them.

I love Aaron Mahnke's podcast "Lore", I always look forward to his newest episode. Since I just recently discovered he has written ebooks I can easily access on my phone, and this summer leaves me with time on my hands, I definitely wanted to give his writing a try. The book was alright, I suppose I was expecting more from Mahnke. The conflict was very "Lore" like, but the characters and the plot line were very blah. I think the matter-of-fact way the characters went through the story was somewhat boring to me. Nevertheless, I think I'll read his newest book "Grave Suspicion" since I'm more of a ghost girl versus a monster girl. Still love you, Aaron Mahnke!

Consumed edition by Aaron Mahnke Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

It was alright but a little dramatic. Could have had more ambiance and more frightening scenes. I wish the author handed made himself such an obvious character. Still enjoyed it. Worth it.
I liked the book overall, but at times it was overly wordy and the dialogue was cringy. His podcast, Lore, is fantastic however. I highly recommend it.
Absolutely wonderful book. Aaron Mahnke has a gift for supernatural storytelling.

I have a little quibble with the sudden moralizing about modern life right at the end, but the rest of the book earned it its 5 stars
Very wordy and somewhat boring as an aftereffect. The story is engrossing to a degree, but it feels so "been there done that," especially if you're an avid fan of the horror/thriller genre either by way of books/movies. It can be finished in few hours on a rainy weekend day. Give it a try.
Ok, this book is very similar to Salems Lot, and I was wondering if this was ever addressed? Does he ever say that this book was purposefully written to reflect on salems lot? Main character Ben, new in town, meets a girl and doesn't want to leave her behind so he doesn't leave, young man and older, wiser person to help out, the cemetery! Something is happening that happened before but very few people remember since it was so long ago. I feel like every time something occurs or a new character is introduced, I can equate it or them to something or someone in Kings book. If I hadn't read salems lot at least fifty times, I probably wouldn't notice, but I did and it's ruining this book for me.
As others have stated in previous reviews, this reminds me of a b-grade Stephen King. I did not finish it, unfortunately.
I was initially excited to read one of Aaron's books. Lore podcasts and the show are top knotch. Consumed reels you in with an exciting and well written first chapter then screeches to a hault in chapter two. The characters are constantly over explaining the obvious an I found myself waiting for the story to catch up with me. There were a few other small things that were just dumb, like the remarks and puns about the internet. The story is set in 2014, so why do the characters discuss internet access like my parents in the 90's?
